Another rainy afternoon, but today I used the weather to my advantage. Take a look at what a bit of moisture does to those amazing roofing slates. And the verdigris on the copper gutters and downspouts almost glows. A bit of water even brings out the color of the stone blocks. So, all in all, it wasn’t a bad day to take a photo.

Well, it seems that Frederick has finally been “Occupied.” When I first heard about this I wondered what had taken so long. The first Occupy started back in mid-September and I would have thought something would have shown up here before late January.

I first heard about this via Twitter. If you know of something picture worthy going on in the Historic District, please send me a Tweet! Ain’t technology amazin’?

Another foggy morning, but this one not as nasty as yesterday. Today, there were quite a few folks out to include in my picture.

I am always torn between presenting a fog photo in black and white or color. The glowing lamps and reflections and the deep blue of the breaking dawn in yesterdays photo need to be seen in color. And those same colors are present in the photo above. I chose to offer this one in black and white, however, to give it a bit more of a mysterious or eerie feeling. Always a tough call for me.

This morning we awoke to a dense, icy fog with a bit of sleet still falling from above. And it was that fog and sleet that made these park lights glow so nicely.

Yesterday I mentioned that Lamb Chop suggested a way to make a good picture on a dull day. And her suggestion worked well. But today she and I have different opinions. I found this scene, found the best angle, took a few test exposures and hunkered down to wait for someone to walk through the park. I like to have a bit of the human touch in my photos. Lamb Chop, on the other hand, prefers a pretty photo without some stranger sullying the beauty.

If you take a look at the photo above you may think that she won this battle. But that is not the case. It was so raw this morning that the dogs did not even want to be exercised. And although I waited around for quite a while no one walked through my picture before those wonderful lamps were darkened by their timer and their magic was gone. So, I used one of the test images with the glowing lamps but without the human element, which still worked out quite well.

Lamb Chop has been hanging around photographers too long.

Earlier today I was complaining about having to go out and make a photo happen in the dull, dreary weather we are experiencing today. She told me to keep the sky and the weather out of the photo, to concentrate on details. Lamb Chop was, of course, right.

I think we had more ice than snow in the city this morning. Although there were not a lot of people out early this morning I did catch this guy. And I kinda’ feel sorry for him. He has the same affliction I do. He is carrying a camera.

It was pretty chilly this afternoon on the shady side of the street but Jon was out on his ladder working on the marquee of the Weinberg Center. That’s Nicole in the green coat providing ground support. She was sorting letters and handing them up.

This started out as a much tighter shot focusing on the repeating chandeliers showing through the double windows of the doors. Then I made the frame a bit wider and included the nifty grill work in the windows flanking and above those doors. Then, then, the globe lights on either side of the doors came on and I had to make the shot wider still. And, heck, let’s include the chandeliers in the second floor windows, too.

If you need the human touch in a scene you can almost always count on the fact that the dogs must be walked!

It was heavily overcast all day. But after the sun went down the clouds blew out. You can see a few star trails in the sky in the the upper left hand corner of this photo. Even with only a 30 second exposure you can see evidence of the earth’s rotation in those streaking stars.
