July 15, 2011, 56 South Market (rear)

I knew I was going to have a busy day today so I shot this picture at 6:30 this morning but am only just now getting time to post it.

I think very few people know that several facades along South Market Street are just that, facades.  If you step around back, it looks like a movie set with steel beams holding up the one wall  that fronts the street.  These properties have been like this for decades but were recently auctioned off.  Perhaps there will be a bit of new development here in the future.

There are a lot of other things of interest in this photo.  The section of the painted sign on the side of the building that remains is in great shape.  That same side of that building on the right clearly shows the ghost of what had been its neighbor.  On the far side of Market Street you can see the weather vane on top of the United Fire Company and one of the newer buildings downtown can be seen rising up behind he Jacobson’s Building.  And on top of all of that, the morning sky lends a hint of what turned out to be a beautiful day.

  1. I have always wanted to see the back of the facades but thought they were closed off to the public. I will have to go check them out.

    • I am sure it is private property, but it is not fenced off. You can get there via an alley off of the south side of Carroll Creek just east of Market.
