It may sound a little perverse but I think that in the winter there is a good bit more sunshine hitting the buildings and streets in the Historic District than there is in the summer.  In the summer all of those leaves make a lot of shade that leave this building and its brethren only partially illuminated.  This photo would look way different if the tree shown here in shadow had its full complement of summer foliage.

  1. And we need all the sunshine that we can get! I think you are right on about the light in the winter.

  2. Certainly leaves block a lot of summer sun, but this time of year the north side of these east-west streets get a lower angle sun. The houses behind you would be in shadows. There has been some painting going on along there this fall – looks nice.
