For the last couple of days I have been looking for a photo that would show not only how cold it has been but also how long it has been cold.  And I found it this afternoon.

You can see that the taller pipe in this photo is venting steam.  But every so often a single drop of water falls off of the lip of the left hand opening and lands on the growing ice stalagmite on the lower pipe.  Not only is the water freezing on contact, with the cold temperatures the stalagmite does not melt and so continues to grow.  Perhaps in a couple of days it will grow enough to connect with the water source.  I will check back to see.

  1. Oh, do! I love that you recognize this. There is a much better word for your “recognition”, but I just finished a glass of red wine and my mind is all fuzzy!
