If you never quite understood the significance of the Tyler Spite House, perhaps this long shot looking south down Record Street might help.

Back in the early 1800’s the city wanted to extend Record Street one block further south to Patrick Street.  Dr.Tyler owned the land the city needed for the street extension and put up this house to stop that road work using an obscure bit of law he found.  Or, in other words, Dr. Tyler built this house to spite the city.

I have imagined this shot for a very long time but only this evening found the front of the Tyler Spite House unmarred by parked cars (and the south end of Record Street was empty, too!).  So this evening I stood out in the rain, set up the tripod in the middle of Record Street and worked this scene to check one more photo off of my mental to-do list.

  1. And a beauty it is!!! Nicely done, Bill!

  2. Nicely done indeed – and thank you for the interesting bit of history surrounding this house.

  3. Thanks Bill. These are beautiful houses and it makes them even more unique when you have some history behind the structure.
