Whenever I shoot on Patrick Street I am always reminded that I am standing on the Historic National Road.  This bit of road through our town was part of the way west for many thousands of settlers beginning in the early 1800’s.

As a child living in Baltimore with my parents I remember traveling through Frederick on Rt. 4o to Wheeling, West Virginia to visit my mother’s family.  There was no Rt. 70 then and we traveled right through the heart of the Historic District along the same alignment those settlers had taken so many years ago.

  1. Once again wonderful. I set my GPS to “Avoid Highways,” so I’m often traveling the National Road, and every single time, I imagine those countless hardy souls that rode, and walked, that road.
