This is probably not the prettiest photo I have ever made in the Historic District.  More properly it falls into the “Gee, I didn’t know that” category.

I was surprised to see that the basement of this corner building extended out beneath the city sidewalk.  Maybe this photo is enough evidence to start a rumor that there is a whole network of passages beneath the Historic District!

  1. I don’t know if it was true in Frederick, but at one time it was common to find doors in the sidewalk with stairs or elavators to access the basement . Especially useful for delivery of goods.

  2. I used to work in this building and there were passages to the other corner buildings that ran beneath Market and Church Streets. The passages themselves were closed off, but the entrances to the passages were still there. The way I heard it those four buildings housed a factory and that how the employees got from one to the other without having to go outside.
